When the Waves Took Root

Look at pictures, strike up a conversation, discover exciting details and spin tales together: twelve imaginative illustrations invite children and parents to immerse themselves in different worlds and invent new stories again and again.

Looking at images, beginning conversations, picking out a thought and spinning it further together: this is the concept behind our series of narrative pictures, which was launched in 2012 by Eva Muggenthaler with When the Fish Went for a Walk and continued with When the Houses Floated Home by Einar Turkowski.

In When the Waves Took Root, artist Lena Schall adds to the series with a volume featuring three-dimensional collages. Renowned children’s philosopher Kristina Calvert has written an afterword for the book.

“Lena Schall’s When the Waves Took Root … is an unusual debut, published by Mixtvision, for all ages.” – 3sat Kulturzeit

“What wonderfully dangerous, colourful and fantastical imagery!” – Donaukurier

When the Waves Took Root … by Lena Schall is crazy, colourful, wild, but also gentle and loving.” – Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger

“Lena Schall has created images that viewers can easily lose themselves in. Tiny worlds characterised by contrasts. Here, wetness sits alongside dryness, beauty alongside ugliness, tiredness alongside wakefulness…
[…] This book does not need text; after all, the images are intended to spark conversation and inspire stories. Since children can give their imaginations free rein, this will be very easy to achieve.” – Kilifü, 2014/15
