Ember is back in Dornwall after helping her family and best friend Ryan escape from the Dawn Empire’s Wandering City. Thanks to the green crystal, which they have retrieved, there is new hope for the people of Dornwall. Longingly, Ember awaits Devan’s return, who wanted to free his sister Yalla from the Crawlers’ underground world. But when Devan still hasn’t returned after several months, Ember is sure that something must have happened to him.
Together with Ryan, she secretly makes the arduous journey through the desert to Gandea to search for Devan and Yalla. But the underground city is in the hands of the of the Howlers, who force all the inhabitants to work in the mines like slaves. Ember and Ryan manage to escape to the surface with Devan and Yalla when a space capsule crashes into the desert in front of them, carrying young Jaina and the android F-5.
And with them emerges a terrible truth that threatens to wipe out the rest of the world …
