Rotraut Susanne Berner was born in Stuttgart in 1948. She studied graphic design at the Munich University of Applied Sciences. After completing her studies she worked in advertising, and has worked independently as a graphic designer and illustrator since 1977.
She has very successfully illustrated many books, including such works as “Sonntagskind” by Gudrun Mebs and “Als die Welt noch jung war” by Jürg Schubiger. She is particularly interested in picture books that tell children’s stories without words. This has led to such books as her “Wimmelbücher” series.
Berner has received many honours and awards for her works, including three nominations for the Hans Christian Andersen Prize, a nominatin for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and a special award for her complete works on the occasion of the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in 2006.
