A story about finding, holding on, and letting go

The moment Mrs. Trueheart, the piano teacher, walks by the poulterer’s store and lays eyes on the white drake, she doesn’t have to think. She just knows: the name of this bird is Ellington. And since he looks at her the way he looks at her and since she knows his name, she buys Ellington and carries him home. They get along well. The piano teacher begins to thrive and her students find the white drake remarkable. But it doesn’t take long before Ellington yearns for fresh air under his feathers. So Mrs. Trueheart puts him on a leash and walks him to the pond where he swims with the other ducks. But due to the fact that it gets increasingly harder to pull Ellington out of the water each night, Mrs. Trueheart discontinues the outings. Soon he is a picture of misery and she is baffled. But then something happens in the life of the piano teacher liberating her and Ellington at one fell swoop.
